Chapter 1 - The Daylight Confession

|

The morning sun felt like an insult after a sleepless night. Liya sat on the edge of her mother’s bed, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of Eleanor’s chest. The new nurse—a sharp-eyed professional whose salary Liya couldn't even guess—sat quietly in the corner, monitoring the IV drip.

At exactly 9:00 AM, a heavy knock echoed through the small house.

Liya opened the front door. Adrian Moretti stood on her peeling porch. In the daylight, stripped of the gala’s dim lighting, he looked even more dangerous. He wore a black tailored suit, no tie, and an expression carved from granite. Behind him, two black SUVs idled on the quiet suburban street, drawing terrified stares from her neighbors.

"May I come in?" Adrian asked.

"You said you were going to tell me what being seen with you would cost me," Liya replied, her voice trembling only slightly. "Tell me now."

Adrian stepped inside, closing the door and shutting out the neighborhood's prying eyes.

"My name is Adrian Moretti," he began, his voice a low, vibrating hum that commanded the cramped living room. "My family controls the ports, the unions, and half the political infrastructure of the eastern seaboard. I am the head of the syndicate."

Liya’s stomach plummeted. She had served drinks to wealthy men before, but this was different. This was blood money.

"And because I left a room full of sharks to help a waitress," Adrian continued, stepping closer until she could smell his cedar cologne, "five of the most powerful families in the country now believe you are my hidden weakness. They will use you to get to me."

"I don't even know you," Liya whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"It doesn't matter," Adrian said, his gaze locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "In my world, perception is reality. And the reality is, if you stay in this house, you and your mother will be dead by Friday."
