Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Household|

By six o'clock that evening, the front door slammed open so hard the framed art on the entryway wall rattled.
Adrian stormed in, looking like a man who had been dragged through a muddy field. His silk tie was lopsided, his hair disheveled, and his face red with fury. Beatrice followed close behind him, holding an empty canvas grocery tote, her proud posture completely shattered.
“What the hell did you do to my cards?” Adrian roared, marching straight toward the dining table where I was casually reviewing a sales report on my laptop.
I looked up calmly. “What do you mean?”
“My supplementary card was declined at my client lunch!” he screamed, slamming his fist on the wood. “I had to borrow cash from my junior associate to pay for a two-hundred-dollar steak! Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was?”
Beatrice stepped forward, her hands trembling with rage. “And my card was rejected in front of the entire market! The butcher told me to step aside because the card was blocked! I was humiliated!”
I slowly closed my laptop lid.
“Oh,” I said softly. “Well, since I resigned from my job as you both insisted, I had to cut all unnecessary expenses immediately.”
Adrian blinked, momentarily caught off guard. “What?”
“I have no income now,” I explained with a sweet, innocent expression. “No corporate salary, no quarterly bonuses, and no company perks. Naturally, I cannot support supplementary cards. Since you are the man of the house, Adrian, household expenses must now come entirely from your pocket.”
Silence descended upon the living room like a heavy curtain.
“You... you canceled them on purpose!” Beatrice spat, her cheeks flushing purple.
“I simply obeyed you,” I replied, standing up. “No more imported groceries, no more daily air conditioning running on high, no more luxury salon trips, and no more fine dining. We are living on your salary now, Adrian.”

Adrian swallowed hard, his throat moving nervously. “Mara, you can’t just—”
“I can,” I interrupted, my voice turning icy cold. “Welcome to the reality of the household you claimed to lead.”
