Chapter 11 - Demands and Distrust|

Over the next forty-eight hours, Selene turned the household into her personal royal court.

She demanded fresh-squeezed orange juice every morning, imported tropical fruits cut into precise cubes, organic herbal teas, and specialized orthopedic pillows for her “pregnancy back pain.”

Beatrice served her hand and foot with sickening devotion. She cooked elaborate bone broth soups, washed Selene’s clothes by hand, and constantly stroked the fake bump while speaking to it in baby voices.

“Eat more, my dear,” Beatrice would coo. “You are feeding the future of our family!”

Adrian strutted around the house like a king, boasting about his masculine prowess to anyone who would listen, though he flinched every time his phone rang with calls from his loan sharks.

Meanwhile, I remained in the shadows, gathering intelligence.

I sent Selene’s full name, social security number, social media handles, and the license plate of the sports car that dropped her off to my private investigator, Rafi Ong.

Rafi was an expert at uncovering corporate fraud. He loved cases involving careless scammers because, as he always said, stupid liars leave bright footprints.

On Thursday morning, Rafi called my private line.

“Mara,” Rafi’s voice chuckled through the speaker. “You are going to love this.”

“Tell me,” I said, sitting at my desk upstairs.

“Your husband’s pregnant mistress isn't pregnant,” Rafi revealed. “Not even a little bit.”

I pulled up the digital report he emailed me.

“She purchased a Medical-Grade Silicone Maternity Costume Prop from a movie supply shop downtown two weeks ago,” Rafi explained. “Paid twelve hundred dollars for the 'Late Stage Deluxe Model.' She also bought a template for a fake ultrasound image from a shady website online.”

“And her connection to Adrian?” I asked.

“She’s actually the girlfriend of Dario Cruz,” Rafi said. “Dario is the primary enforcer for the loan shark syndicate Adrian owes eighty thousand dollars to. The whole plot was cooked up between Dario and Selene.”

I scrolled down to view the attached audio recordings and hidden photographs Rafi’s team had captured at a local cafe.

In one audio clip, Selene’s clear voice giggled softly: “Adrian is such a pathetic idiot. He actually believes I’m carrying his son. The old mother almost cried when she touched the rubber bump. Once we trick the wife into signing over the house rights to settle the marriage, Dario and I will sell the property and leave Adrian holding the debt.”

I played the clip three times.

I didn't feel hurt. I felt a surge of absolute, terrifying clarity.

My enemies weren't just cruel—they were utterly ridiculous. And I was about to give them the stage they deserved.
