Chapter 19 - Shadows from the Dark|

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when the past knocked on my door once again.
I was sitting in my executive office at work, reviewing quarterly expansion budgets, when Kaye knocked softly on the glass door and stepped inside.
“Mara, a courier just delivered a personal package for you,” Kaye said, holding a plain brown envelope sealed with red wax. “No return address, but it’s marked urgent.”
I frowned, taking the heavy envelope. “Thanks, Kaye.”
I opened the red wax seal with a letter opener and pulled out the contents.
Inside were three items:
First, a photograph of Adrian and Beatrice standing outside their crumbling apartment building, looking frail and desperate.
Second, a bank transfer receipt showing that someone had quietly paid off all eighty thousand dollars of Adrian’s loan shark debts in full.
And third, a handwritten letter written in dark black ink.
I unfolded the paper and read the neat, elegant handwriting:
Dear Mara,
You played a magnificent game unmasking those simple fools. Watching you destroy Beatrice and Adrian was truly entertaining.
However, you made one vital mistake. In your crusade to clean your house, you exposed certain financial transactions connected to Dario Cruz—transactions that belonged to my organization.
Because of your evidence, three of my key international accounts were frozen by federal investigators.
Adrian’s debts are now settled. But yours, my dear Regional Director, are just beginning.
I will be visiting your lovely renovated home very soon.
