Chapter 16 - The Great Eviction|

The birthday party disintegrated into pure chaos.
Guests scrambled for the exit, whispering furiously, avoiding eye contact with Beatrice as she wailed on the floor. Relatives practically trampled over each other to get away from the looming crime scene.
The police officers immediately escorted Selene out the door in handcuffs to face questioning regarding her fraud plot with Dario Cruz.
Adrian collapsed onto the couch, holding his head in his hands, weeping like a broken child.
“Mara... please,” Adrian whimpered, looking up at me with red, swollen eyes. “I was tricked by Selene! I didn't know! Give me one more chance!”
“You weren't tricked when your mother shaved my head, Adrian,” I replied, my voice steady and unyielding. “You weren't tricked when you helped her break into my safe. You were just greedy.”
Rafi Ong stood over them with a stopwatch in his hand.
“Twenty minutes left, folks,” Rafi said pleasantly. “Pack fast, or the officers will toss your bags into the gutter.”
Beatrice scrambled up from the floor, her makeup ruined, her violet birthday dress wrinkled and stained with tears. She and Adrian ran upstairs like panicked animals, shoving their clothes into two battered suitcases and a duffel bag.
They couldn't take the designer bags, the jewelry, or the expensive electronics I had purchased over the years—Julian ensured that all assets purchased with my sole funds were secured as evidence.
At exactly 8:30 PM, the police officers escorted Adrian and Beatrice out through the front gate.
Beatrice carried one dragging suitcase, her head bowed in utter disgrace as the neighbors stood on their lawns, filming her exit on their phones. Adrian walked beside her, shivering in the cool evening air, stripped of his arrogance, his marriage, his home, and his dignity.
The heavy iron gate slammed shut behind them with a loud CLANG.
I stood in the center of my large, quiet living room.

The blue birthday cake sat abandoned on the table. The silicone belly lay discarded in a trash bag by the door.
For the first time in three long years, the air inside my house felt clean.
