Chapter 18 - War on the 40th Floor

The city council chamber erupted into wild applause as the council members voted unanimously to revoke Sinclair Maritime’s licenses, seizing all dock assets and transferring them to the newly formed Vandermir Public Trust.
Victor Sinclair was led out of the courtroom in heavy chains, knowing he would spend the remainder of his life inside a federal penitentiary.
As the gallery cleared, Margot Sinclair rushed toward the front of the room, blocking Dela’s path.
Margot looked disheveled, her expensive persona completely shattered. "You ruined my life!" she spat venomously at Dela. "You took my money, my father, my status, and my fiancé!"
Dela stopped walking. She looked at Margot with cool, calm pity.
"You ruined your own life, Margot," Dela said quietly. "You measured your worth by how many people you could look down on. I measured mine by how many people I could protect."
Gus stepped up beside Dela, placing a firm, protective hand over the small of her back. He looked at Margot with absolute indifference.
"Leave, Margot," Gus ordered softly. "Before I have security remove you for trespassing."
Margot sneered, turning on her heel and rushing out of the courtroom in tears as news cameras flashed in her face.
Gus turned to Dela, looking down at her with deep pride. "It’s over, Counselor."
"Yes," Dela breathed, holding her belly as a sudden, sharp contraction rippled through her lower abdomen. She winced slightly, taking a quick breath.

Gus’s eyes filled with immediate concern. "Dela? What's wrong?"
Dela looked up at him, a breathless laugh escaping her lips. "Gus... I think your new Chief Legal Counsel needs to take maternity leave immediately."
