Chapter 12 - The Boss Steps In

|

The federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Victor Sinclair by the arms and forcing his hands behind his back.

"Gus! Do something!" Margot screamed, tears ruining her expensive makeup as she grabbed her fiancé’s arm. "Tell them it's a mistake! You're the owner of this building! Stop them!"

Gus slowly stood up from his seat. He looked down at Margot’s hand on his sleeve, his expression colder than the winter air outside the window.

He reached down, picked up Margot's hand, and removed it from his suit.

"The engagement is terminated, Margot," Gus stated flatly. "And as of this moment, you and your father are barred from every property owned by Vandermir Enterprises nationwide."

"Gus, please!" Margot sobbed as officers stepped up to escort her out of the building as an accessory to the vault locking incident.

Gus ignored her cries. He turned his attention back to the center of the room, where the thirty-two wealthy guests stood in shocked silence.

Gus walked over to the cherrywood table, picked up the thick stack of six thousand dollars in cash that Margot had placed there earlier, and picked up the contract Dela had slashed through.

He walked over to Dela, standing close beside her.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Gus addressed the room, his powerful voice commanding total reverence. "Tonight's merger with Sinclair Maritime is officially canceled. Instead, Vandermir Enterprises is establishing a new forensic auditing firm to clean up the city's waterfront logistics."

He placed the stack of six thousand dollars directly into Dela's hands, along with her blue fountain pen.

"And leading that firm as Chief Legal Counsel," Gus declared, looking at Dela with undeniable pride, "will be Attorney Delilah Hawthorne."

The guests, recognizing the brilliant legal mind that had just saved them millions of dollars, broke into a loud, resounding ovation.

Dela looked down at the money in her hands, then looked up at Gus. A tear finally slipped down her cheek—not a tear of sadness or exhaustion, but of overwhelming relief.
