Chapter 15 - Retaliation in the Dark

Without waiting another second, Dela rushed out from behind her desk.
Gus was right behind her, grabbing his coat and signaling to his head of security, Marco, who immediately pulled out his radio.
"Get the SUV ready at B2!" Gus ordered into his phone as they hurried down the executive elevator. "Deploy team two to the West Side address right now!"
"Gus, my sister Nell is recovering from surgery at my apartment!" Dela panicked, her hands shaking uncontrollably as the elevator descended. "If Victor’s men get to her—"
"They won't touch her," Gus promised, his voice turning icy and deadly. "I have four armed guards stationed outside your apartment building twenty-four hours a day."
When they reached B2, a black armored SUV was already idling with its doors open. Gus helped Dela into the back seat before getting in beside her. The SUV roared out of the garage, tearing through the rain-slicked city streets with sirens blaring.
Fifteen minutes later, the SUV slammed to a halt outside Dela’s West Side apartment building.
The front glass doors of the building were shattered. Two dark sedans were parked illegally on the curb with their engines running.
Gus pulled a concealed firearm from his shoulder holster. "Stay in the vehicle, Dela."
"No!" Dela insisted, opening her door. "I'm coming with you!"
"Dela, listen to me," Gus commanded, grabbing her shoulders, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Trust me. I will bring your sister down safely. Stay behind Marco."
Gus and his tactical security team charged through the shattered front entrance, their weapons drawn.
Gunfire echoed from the third floor.
Dela stood near the armored SUV, her heart in her throat, holding her stomach as she prayed silently for her sister's life.
Two minutes passed. Then three.
The heavy front doors of the building opened.
Gus stepped out into the daylight, carrying nineteen-year-old Nell in his arms, wrapping his heavy coat around her shoulders. Behind them, Marco and his security team led three hand-cuffed hitmen out of the building.
"Nell!" Dela cried out, rushing forward.
Gus set Nell down gently against the SUV's leather seats. Nell looked pale and shaken, but entirely unharmed.
"Addie!" Nell sobbed, wrapping her arms around her older sister. "Mr. Vandermir's men got into the apartment before those awful men could break down the bedroom door!"

Dela held her sister tightly, tears streaming down her face, before looking up at Gus.
Gus stood beside the vehicle, holstering his weapon, looking down at her with a quiet, fierce devotion that needed no words.
