Chapter 5 - The Boy in the Shadows

Unnoticed by the crowd of whispering, judgmental adults, a small, remarkably quiet figure stood near the edge of the grand hall, partially hidden by the bulky frame of a massive antique sofa. It was Mateo. At only eight years old, he was an incredibly observant and deeply sensitive boy. He was the son of Valeria’s younger brother, making him Don Alejandro’s absolute favorite grandson.

Dressed neatly in a crisp white dress shirt and dark, tailored trousers, Mateo looked every bit the young, privileged heir of the Alcázar dynasty. But right now, his pale, youthful face was completely drained of color, and his small hands were balled into incredibly tight, shaking fists at his sides. His wide, terrified eyes darted frantically between the weeping, handcuffed maid and his imposing, immaculately dressed aunt.

Mateo knew a terrible secret. He had been playing quietly in the upstairs hallway earlier that afternoon, pushing his small toy cars along the plush, thick carpet when he witnessed something he definitely wasn't supposed to see. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs like a trapped, panicked bird. He knew the absolute, undeniable truth of what had happened to the missing diamond necklace.

But he was just a child, and the adult world was incredibly intimidating and loud. His Aunt Valeria was a terrifying, unpredictable force of nature in the mansion. She yelled at the staff constantly, she aggressively manipulated his father, and she always got exactly what she wanted, no matter the cost. The terrifying thought of crossing her made Mateo feel physically sick to his stomach.

He watched the towering police officers grab Lucía’s arms, preparing to drag her out the grand front doors and throw her into a waiting squad car. He saw the sheer, unadulterated terror in the young maid's tear-filled eyes. He vividly remembered how Lucía had secretly sneaked him an extra chocolate cookie just yesterday when his strict nanny wasn't looking, offering him a warm, genuine smile.

A fierce, agonizing moral battle raged inside his small chest. The intense, paralyzing fear of his powerful aunt violently warred against the heavy, painful guilt of watching an innocent person suffer for a crime they did not commit. He had to make a choice, and he had to make it right now.
