Chapter 19 - The First Anniversary

That evening, Lucía sat comfortably by her mother’s bedside in their newly purchased, warm, and secure home. She recounted the moving story of the young mother at the hospital. Her own mother, much healthier now and smiling brightly, gently reached out and traced her fragile fingers over Lucía’s wrists, where the angry red marks from the police handcuffs had long since faded away.

"They maliciously tried to brand you as a filthy thief," her mother whispered with immense, overflowing pride. "And instead, you ended up becoming the fierce, protective guardian of the poor's money."

Lucía laughed softly, wiping a tear of profound joy from her eye.

"Life certainly has a very strange, poetic way of defending us."

Mateo and Lucía developed a beautiful, enduring friendship. The young heir frequently visited her bustling office at the foundation, bringing colorful drawings, asking endless questions, and possessing an insatiable, joyful curiosity about her work.

"Did you catch another bad robber today?" he would ask eagerly, leaning heavily over her desk.

"No, today I just corrected incredibly boring tax invoices," she would laugh.

"That sounds incredibly boring," Mateo would wrinkle his nose in distaste.

"True justice usually has a lot of very boring days," Lucía would smile.

But Mateo never forgot the traumatic day of the necklace. Occasionally, completely out of the blue, he would apologize again for hesitating. Lucía always gave him the exact same comforting, reassuring response.

"You spoke up when it mattered the most, Mateo. That is the only thing that counts."

Exactly one year after the horrific incident, Don Alejandro organized a beautiful, understated event to officially relaunch the foundation. It was held in the exact same grand hall where Lucía had been cruelly handcuffed. But this time, there was no expensive champagne, and there were no vain, judgmental socialites. The room was filled with doctors, school teachers, struggling mothers, and humble workers.
