Chapter 14 - The Meaning of Bravery

Don Alejandro slowly walked over to the young maid, his imposing, intimidating figure softening significantly. He stopped right in front of her, the immensely powerful master of the estate standing humbly before the lowest-ranking servant.
"Lucía," he said gently, his deep voice echoing in the sudden quiet of the hall. "On behalf of this entire family and this house, I offer you my most profound and sincere apologies."
Lucía opened her mouth to respond, but a massive lump formed in her throat, painfully choking off her words. For twenty agonizing minutes, these wealthy, privileged people had looked at her like she was a disgusting, dangerous criminal. Now, the patriarch was publicly begging for her forgiveness.
"I... I only came here to work and help my mother," she finally managed to whisper, fresh tears of immense relief spilling over her eyelashes.
"I know," Don Alejandro nodded solemnly, his eyes filled with regret.
Mateo slowly stepped out from behind his grandfather and walked up to Lucía. The boy looked up at her, wiping his own tear-stained cheeks with his sleeve.
"I am sorry it took me so long to say something," he sniffled loudly.
Lucía ignored the stares of the wealthy guests, dropping down to her knees so she was perfectly eye-level with the brave little boy. She reached out and gently held his small, trembling hands.
"You were incredibly brave, Mateo."
"I was really scared of Aunt Valeria," he admitted, his voice trembling with residual fear.

"True bravery isn't about not being scared," Lucía told him softly, offering a warm, genuine smile. "Bravery is forcing your voice to speak the absolute truth, even when your whole body is shaking with fear."
Mateo hugged her tightly, burying his face in her shoulder. That afternoon, Valeria was formally arrested. She was escorted out of the mansion in the very same handcuffs she had gleefully intended for Lucía, her head bowed in absolute disgrace as she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser.
