Chapter 18 - A New Path

The foundation underwent rigorous, independent external audits to ensure every single donated penny successfully reached its intended destination. But perhaps the most surprising and beautiful change came from a special request made by young Mateo.

"Grandpa, I want Lucía to come work at the foundation with us," the boy asked one quiet evening.

When Don Alejandro officially presented the offer, Lucía’s eyes went wide with sheer shock.

"Sir, I am incredibly honored, but I don't know the first thing about corporate offices or running a charity," she admitted nervously.

Don Alejandro smiled warmly.

"You are smart, and you can learn."

She accepted a modest position as an administrative assistant. Concurrently, the family provided her with a full, comprehensive scholarship to study accounting and finance at a highly respected local university during the evenings. It wasn't an act of pity or simple, condescending charity. Don Alejandro made his reasoning crystal clear.

"You possessed the sharp eyes to find the very first clue of the corruption. You have earned the absolute right to learn how to track those clues properly."

Lucía learned with astonishing speed. Perhaps it was because she inherently understood the true, life-altering value of every single coin. Or perhaps it was because, having been brutally and unjustly accused herself, she had developed a razor-sharp, infallible instinct for spotting lies, traps, and inconsistencies.

Over the next few years, her meticulous, relentless work uncovered dozens of small, hidden financial irregularities that highly paid professional auditors had completely overlooked. She personally helped recover thousands of stolen dollars. She regularly visited the rural hospitals and met the desperate families who were finally receiving the financial aid that Valeria had cruelly stolen from them.

One afternoon, a young, exhausted mother grabbed Lucía’s hand in a hospital corridor.

"Thank you," the woman wept. "They told us the foundation was bankrupt."

"It has resources now," Lucía promised, her throat tight with emotion.
