Chapter 9 - The Whispers

The estate slept, but the shadows were always wide awake.
Emily had "accidentally" missed the last staff bus to the city. Enzo had begrudgingly allowed her to stay in one of the tiny, sparse guest rooms in the servant's quarters for the night.
At 2:00 AM, Emily slipped out of her small bed. She dressed in black, putting on a pair of soft-soled sneakers she had bought specifically for this purpose.
She crept through the labyrinth of the mansion’s servant corridors, avoiding the main hallways where Rafe’s security cameras swept endlessly. She was heading for the east wing basement—the physical archives. Santino kept digital records, but the old, sensitive family ledgers were strictly paper, locked away in a climate-controlled vault.
As she neared the heavy oak door leading to the basement stairs, she heard voices.
She pressed her back flat against the cold plaster wall, holding her breath.
Two figures were standing in the dim light of the library doorway down the hall.
“Santino is refusing the Morretti deal,” Victoria’s sharp, aristocratic voice hissed. “He is going to start a war we cannot afford to fight.”
“The boss knows what he’s doing, Victoria,” Rafe rumbled, though his voice lacked its usual absolute conviction.
“He is a cripple playing at being a king,” Victoria spat viciously. “He is weak. The families see it. If we don't act, the Morrettis will wipe us out and take the ports by force.”
“What are you suggesting?” Rafe asked, his tone dropping to a dangerous whisper.
“I am suggesting that it is time for a change in leadership. Before he drags the entire Ferrara legacy into the grave with him.”
“If you move against him, the loyalists will slaughter us.”
“They won't if it looks like an accident,” Victoria said coldly. “Or if someone else takes the fall. That little secretary follows him everywhere. She’s an outsider. The perfect scapegoat.”
Emily squeezed her eyes shut, her blood running cold. Victoria wasn't just plotting a coup; she was planning to frame Emily for her brother’s murder.
“I need access to the funds in Warehouse Four to pay the mercenaries,” Victoria continued. “Get me the keys, Rafe.”
“I’ll get them,” Rafe agreed.
Footsteps began to move toward the staircase.

Emily didn't wait. She turned and sprinted silently back down the servant's corridor, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm in her throat. She had to warn Santino. But if she did, she would have to admit she was sneaking around the house at 2:00 AM.
She was trapped between a mafia coup and her own dangerous lies.
