Chapter 2 - The Envelope

|
Forty minutes later, Emily sat in the sterile service kitchen with a thick, scratchy towel wrapped tightly around her shivering shoulders.
The adrenaline had finally crashed, leaving her feeling hollow and exhausted.
Enzo Baron, the elderly, impeccably dressed man who managed the Ferrara household calendar and staff, entered the room. His face was a mask of professional neutrality.
“A transfer has been arranged,” Enzo announced smoothly.
Emily looked up, confused.
“Transfer?”
“Another household. Same salary. Better hours. You will be very comfortable there, Miss Taylor.”
Then Victoria Ferrara appeared in the doorway behind him.
Santino’s older sister carried herself like royalty, wearing a pristine white dress that hadn't been splashed by a single drop of pool water. She held a thick, unmarked white envelope in her manicured hand.
“What you did out there was extraordinary,” Victoria said warmly, though her eyes remained entirely cold. “Please. The Ferrara family remembers kindness.”
Emily looked at the thick envelope.
Money. A payoff to disappear quietly.
She kept both of her hands securely wrapped around her mug of hot tea.
“No, thank you.”
Victoria’s practiced smile never moved a fraction of an inch.
She stepped forward and placed the envelope deliberately beside the sugar bowl on the counter.
Then, the low, mechanical hum of wheels sounded in the corridor.
Santino entered the kitchen wearing dry clothes—a dark sweater and tailored slacks.
Rafe walked silently behind him, keeping a respectful distance without offering to touch or push the motorized chair.
Santino’s dark eyes swept the room. He noticed the envelope on the counter.
Then he looked at Enzo.
“There’s been a mistake,” Santino said quietly.
Enzo stiffened, his posture becoming perfectly rigid.
“Sir?”
“No transfer was approved.”
“Everything has already been arranged with the other estate, sir. It is customary—”
Santino held up one finger, letting Enzo finish his sentence before cutting him down.
“Undo it.”
His intense gaze shifted directly to Emily, pinning her to the chair.
“She stays.”
Nobody in the kitchen dared to speak a word.
“Starting tomorrow morning, Miss Taylor works directly for me.”
Victoria’s beautiful face remained perfectly composed, but her knuckles turned white where she gripped her designer purse.
Enzo’s professional mask cracked, revealing genuine shock.
“My office. My calendar. My correspondence,” Santino commanded, his voice leaving absolutely no room for debate or negotiation.
Santino turned his chair smoothly toward the hallway.
Then, without looking back, he issued his final order:
“Find her dry clothes.”
Emily remained frozen beside the untouched envelope of hush money.

For nearly three agonizing years, she had been working multiple jobs, forging references, and taking shifts scrubbing floors just trying to move closer to the inner circle of the Ferrara family.
By jumping into a pool and saving Santino’s life, she had just been placed closer than she had ever dared to plan.
