Chapter 5 - The Silent Observer

|
For the next two weeks, Emily’s entire world became the heavy oak desk in the corner of Santino’s study.
She spent twelve hours a day immersed in the logistical nightmare of the Ferrara empire. To the untrained eye, she was simply sorting legitimate business contracts, shipping manifests for imported olive oil, and real estate acquisitions.
But Emily was meticulous. She saw the patterns.
She noticed how certain shipping routes always reported a twenty percent loss, a loss that magically corresponded with cash deposits made to offshore shell companies. She noticed how the names of shell companies often mirrored the names of Victoria Ferrara’s favorite luxury boutiques in Paris and Milan.
Santino rarely spoke to her during these hours. He sat at his own desk, fielding phone calls in rapid, hushed Italian, commanding an invisible army of men who moved the city to his will.
But he watched her.
Emily could feel his intense gaze boring into her back while she filed papers. He was waiting for her to ask questions. He was waiting for her to snoop when he left the room.
She never did. When Santino rolled out of the study for his physical therapy sessions, Emily kept her hands strictly on her assigned work. She knew the security cameras in the corners of the ceiling were recording every blink she made.
One Tuesday afternoon, Victoria swept into the study without knocking.
She ignored Emily completely, walking straight to her brother’s desk.
“Santino, the Morretti family is demanding a sit-down regarding the docks,” Victoria said, her tone sharp and impatient. “We need to yield a percentage to keep the peace.”
“We yield nothing,” Santino replied calmly, not looking up from his laptop.
“You are being stubborn,” Victoria hissed, leaning over the desk. “Since your accident, the other families smell weakness. If you don't compromise, they will strike.”
Santino finally looked up. His eyes were cold enough to freeze blood.
“Let them strike. I will crush them. And Victoria? Knock before you enter my office.”
Victoria’s beautiful face twisted in fury. She glared at Santino, then turned her venomous gaze toward Emily, who was silently typing in the corner.
“You let the help listen to family business?” Victoria scoffed.
“Miss Taylor is invisible until I require her to be otherwise,” Santino stated.
Victoria sneered, turning on her heel and marching out of the room, slamming the heavy doors behind her.
Emily didn't stop typing.
“She hates you,” Santino noted quietly into the silence of the room.
May you like
“She hates that she can't control you,” Emily corrected softly, keeping her eyes on her screen. “I am just the furniture she tripped over.”
Santino let out a low, breathy chuckle. It was the first time she had ever heard him laugh.
