Chapter 20 - The Final Game

|
Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the newly renovated Providence hotel was filled to capacity. The elite of Rhode Island society, alongside the quiet, powerful figures of the underworld, mingled beneath glittering crystal chandeliers.
It was a charity gala, ostensibly raising money for a local hospital, but everyone in the room knew it was a display of absolute power. The Ferrara family was hosting, demonstrating that the empire had not only survived the internal coup but emerged stronger and entirely unified.
Emily stood near the massive arched windows, holding a glass of champagne. She wore a stunning, floor-length midnight blue gown that caught the light with every movement. She looked effortless, commanding, and completely at home in a world that had once terrified her.
She watched as the crowd parted like the Red Sea.
Santino Ferrara moved through the ballroom in his customized wheelchair, dressed impeccably in a tailored black tuxedo. He shook hands with politicians, nodded to capos, and exuded a terrifying, magnetic authority that demanded absolute respect.
He broke away from a conversation with the Mayor and navigated his way smoothly across the floor toward Emily.
“You look bored, my love,” Santino murmured, stopping beside her, his dark eyes sweeping over her with possessive adoration.
“I am just calculating how much money you are going to extort from the Governor tonight,” Emily smiled, taking a sip of her champagne.
“It is not extortion if it goes to a pediatric ward,” Santino grinned, a rare, genuine expression that he reserved only for her.
He reached into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, worn silver pocket watch. It was battered and old, the glass face slightly cracked.
Emily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
It was Tommy’s watch. The one he had worn every day since their father died.
“The FBI concluded their excavation of Warehouse Four this morning,” Santino said softly, his voice dropping so only she could hear. “They recovered his remains. Victoria has officially been indicted for murder and racketeering. She will never see the outside of a federal prison cell.”
He gently placed the silver watch into her palm, folding her fingers over it.
“He is going home, Emily. You got him back.”
Tears welled in Emily’s eyes, but she didn't let them fall. She squeezed the watch tightly, feeling a profound, agonizing closure finally settle over her heart. The ghost that had haunted her for three years could finally rest.
She looked down at the man who had made it happen. The disabled mafia boss who had handed her the keys to his kingdom and his heart.
“Thank you,” she whispered fiercely.
Santino reached up, gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb.
“You saved my life, Emily,” Santino said, his voice a low, gravelly promise. “I will spend the rest of mine making sure you never have to fight another battle alone.”
He offered her his hand.
Emily took it, standing tall beside the most powerful man in the city as the orchestra began to play a slow, sweeping waltz.
The entire ballroom turned to watch them. There were no whispers of pity. There were no stares of judgment. There was only absolute, terrifying respect for the King and the woman who had dared to jump into the deep end to save him.
The music swelled, and Santino looked up at her, a dangerous, beautiful smile on his lips.

“So, Emily,” Santino murmured, kissing the back of her hand. “What is our next move?”
She smiled back, the weight of the silver watch warm in her palm, ready to take on the world.
