Chapter 18 - The Reveal

|

The rear window of the armored sedan rolled down smoothly.

Santino sat in the back, the interior bathed in the soft glow of the streetlamps. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket, just a crisp white shirt, the top buttons undone. He looked less like a mafia boss and more like a man who had just lost something incredibly important.

“It is a long walk to the city, Emily,” Santino said softly.

“I like walking,” Emily replied, keeping her distance from the car.

“Get in,” Santino ordered gently. “I am not asking as your boss. I am asking as a man who owes you his life.”

Emily hesitated, then sighed, pulling open the heavy door and sliding into the plush leather seat opposite him. The driver instantly put the car in gear, pulling away from the gates and heading down the dark, winding coastal road.

They rode in silence for a long time. Emily stared out the window, watching the moonlight reflect off the black ocean waves.

“I spent my entire life building walls to keep people out,” Santino finally said, breaking the quiet. “I built an empire on fear and intimidation. When I lost the use of my legs, I built the walls even higher. I assumed everyone who looked at me saw weakness. I assumed everyone wanted to betray me.”

He turned his head to look at her.

“But you never saw weakness, Emily. You just saw a man trapped in a pool, and you dove in without hesitation. You saw a brother mourning a betrayal, and you stayed in the room.”

“You are not weak, Santino,” Emily said softly, meeting his gaze. “You are the strongest man I have ever met.”

Santino’s dark eyes softened completely. The terrifying, ruthless mafia king vanished, leaving behind only the man beneath the armor.

“I told you to take the money and disappear because I thought it was the right thing to do,” Santino murmured, leaning slightly forward. “I thought I was protecting you from the darkness of my world. But watching you walk out that door... I realized that my world is entirely empty without you in it.”

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart began to pound a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs.

“Santino...” she whispered.
