Chapter 18 - The Hospital Rush

Daniel briefly forced his heavy eyelids open, his hazy gaze locking onto his wife, who was writhing in sudden agony. "No..." he murmured weakly, trying to reach out for her from the stretcher before the paramedics restrained his arm.
Valeria, panting through the intense wave of pain, forced a brave, wavering smile onto her face. "It looks like... our son wants to meet you tonight," she gasped out, sweat beading on her forehead.
The scene rapidly dissolved into highly organized medical chaos. Two separate ambulances sped away from the ruined mansion, their blaring sirens piercing the quiet night air, their flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. In the first ambulance, paramedics fought desperately to keep Daniel’s blood pressure stable, pumping him full of fluids and coagulants as he drifted in and out of consciousness. In the second, Valeria focused on her breathing, riding the crests of agonizing, premature contractions while fiercely protecting her belly with her hands.

Back at the estate, the police had swarmed the property, establishing a massive crime scene. Crime scene investigators carefully examined the fallen chandelier. They quickly discovered the frayed, cleanly snipped ends of the main steel cables. A pair of heavy-duty wire cutters was logged into evidence. Furthermore, the security team had pulled the mansion's surveillance footage. The grainy video clearly showed Veronica lurking on the catwalk above the chandelier holding the tools just minutes before the guests arrived.
However, a massive manhunt yielded absolutely nothing. The evil matriarch had utilized a forgotten, underground service tunnel to bypass the police perimeter, vanishing completely into the dark city.
