Chapter 1 - The First Snap

The mansion was bursting with esteemed guests, the elite of the city mingling under the warm, golden glow of the grand hall. Waiters in crisp white shirts navigated through the sea of silk dresses and tailored suits, carrying silver trays adorned with crystal flutes of expensive champagne. The ambient sound was a harmonious blend of a live string quartet, the gentle clinking of glasses, and the low, sophisticated murmur of polite conversation. Amidst this orchestrated perfection, the first sharp, metallic twang tore through the upper reaches of the grand hall.

It was a sound so brief, so seemingly insignificant, that it was incredibly easy to miss. Almost unrecognizable amidst the overwhelming symphony of the extravagant dinner party, the noise faded into the background for nearly everyone present. But Daniel heard it. He possessed an instinct honed by years of hyper-vigilance, and his sharp eyes immediately darted upward toward the vaulted ceiling.

Suspended directly over the geometric center of the marble floor was a colossal crystal chandelier. It was an antique masterpiece, a sprawling monstrosity of cut glass, brass, and iron that weighed several tons. Directly beneath its glittering, heavy shadow stood his wife, Valeria. She was eight months pregnant, glowing with the radiant warmth of impending motherhood. She stood near the base of the sweeping grand staircase, deeply engaged in a cheerful conversation with a female nurse they had invited as a guest. One of Valeria’s delicate hands rested lovingly on her swollen belly, her face illuminated by a bright, carefree smile.

She saw nothing. She did not hear the second, much louder, agonizing creak of straining steel above her. But Daniel did. The main suspension cable had begun to snap, fraying violently, one thick metallic strand at a time.
