Chapter 12 - A Battle of Will

The agonizing stalemate stretched on, each second feeling like a torturous eternity. Daniel’s arm began to tremble uncontrollably. The massive blood loss from his lacerated side was taking a devastating toll, draining the vital oxygen from his straining muscles. Despite his fierce, unwavering will to protect his wife and child, his physical strength was unequivocally failing.

His sweaty, bloodstained fingers began to slowly slip against the smooth, expensive fabric of Veronica’s evening glove. The tip of the hunting knife lowered by a centimeter. Then, terrifyingly, another centimeter. It hovered dangerously close, almost brushing the silk of Valeria's maternity dress.

Seeing her husband's strength fading, Valeria desperately reached up with both of her own hands. She grabbed onto Veronica's forearm, pulling back with all the power she could muster in her awkward, cornered position. But Veronica, fueled by decades of bitter resentment and the manic adrenaline of a cornered predator, was inexplicably stronger. She pushed down ruthlessly, a maniacal grin spreading across her face as she felt their resistance crumbling.

"Daniel..." Valeria whispered, her voice cracking with despair as tears blurred her vision. "I... I can't stop her. She's too strong."

Daniel looked into his wife's eyes, seeing the profound, paralyzing fear reflecting back at him. Beneath her trembling hands, she could feel the baby kicking frantically, as if sensing the impending doom. That small, fragile movement ignited a final, explosive spark deep within Daniel's soul. He clenched his jaw so hard his teeth felt ready to shatter. He tightened his failing grip one last, desperate time, halting the blade's descent.

"I will not," he roared, his voice rough and guttural, "allow you to touch them!"
