Chapter 11 - The Desperate Grip

In the fraction of a second before the lethal blade could pierce his wife's flesh, a primal surge of adrenaline flooded Daniel’s failing body. Pushing through an insurmountable wall of agony, he reacted with the very last ounce of strength he possessed.

He viciously threw his free, uninjured arm forward, his muscles screaming in protest. His hand shot out like a vice, clamping tightly around Veronica’s wrist just millimeters before the knife reached its target. The long steel blade hung suspended in the air, trembling violently a mere two centimeters away from Valeria’s taut skin.

Valeria let out a piercing, terrified scream, throwing her arms up to shield her face, unable to move anywhere else.

Daniel’s knuckles turned bone-white as he squeezed his stepmother's wrist with a crushing grip. Veronica let out a surprised grunt, her eyes wide with shock at his unexpected resistance. She threw her entire body weight forward, pressing down on the knife with both hands, trying to force the blade into the young woman's stomach.

"Let go of me, you pathetic fool!" Veronica snarled, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into feral rage.

"Never," Daniel growled through gritted teeth, his jaw locked in intense concentration.

The standoff was a terrifying tableau of life and death. The hostages watched in paralyzed horror, too afraid of the detonator to intervene, yet unable to look away from the desperate struggle. Daniel’s bicep bulged, straining against the immense downward pressure Veronica was applying. He was fighting not just a deranged killer, but his own rapidly failing biology. The pool of blood beneath him was expanding, stealing his energy, but his determination to protect his family fueled his iron grip on the murderer's wrist.
