Chapter 4 - The Rain-Soaked Streets

|
The alley was pitch black, lit only by the neon sign of the diner flashing red and blue through the torrential rain. Dante stood up, swaying slightly, and offered Leah a hand.
She took it, feeling the rough calluses on his palm.
"We need a car," Dante said, scanning the empty street. "And a burner phone. My electronics were dumped when they took me."
"I have a phone," Leah said, pulling her cheap, cracked device from her vest. "But I don't have a car. I take the bus."
Dante took the phone, his large fingers dwarfing the small screen. He dialed a number by memory, the keypad clicking loudly in the quiet alley.
"Enzo," Dante spoke into the receiver, his voice shifting from exhausted to terrifyingly commanding. "I'm alive. Sable made a move. He bought my security detail."
Leah watched him, wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the freezing rain.
"No, don't send anyone to pick me up. I don't know who else is on Sable's payroll," Dante continued. "Lock down the harbor. Freeze the accounts. I'm going into the shadows for twenty-four hours."
He hung up and handed the phone back to Leah. He looked down at her shivering form, her cheap uniform soaked through, her hair plastered to her face. Without a word, he stripped off his ruined, expensive suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
It was warm, smelling of rain, gunpowder, and expensive cologne.
"We can't stay on the street," Dante said. "Where do you live?"
"No," Leah shook her head instantly. "I live in a tiny apartment. My eight-year-old nephew is there. I am not bringing a mafia war to his bedroom."
"Leah," Dante stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "They saw your face. They know you wear a Grand Aurelia uniform. By morning, they will have your employee file, your address, and your nephew's name. You are already in this war."
The reality of his words hit her like a physical blow. Her knees felt weak.

"Then we have to get to him before they do," she whispered, panic rising in her chest.
"Lead the way," Dante said.
