Chapter 20 - The Crossroads

|

Dante’s eyes snapped up to hers, a flicker of raw, desperate hope breaking through his exhausted facade. His large hands instinctively gripped her hips, pulling her flush against him.

"Leah," he murmured, his voice a gravelly warning. "If you stay, there is no going back. You will be the Queen of a very dark empire. You will have a target on your back for the rest of your life. Every choice I make will affect you."

"I pulled you out of a laundry cart, Dante," Leah said, her gaze steady and fierce. "I shot a man in a nightclub. I survived a siege in my own kitchen. I stopped being a normal waitress the second I unlocked that steam tunnel."

She leaned down, her lips hovering inches from his.

"I don't want a quiet life," she whispered. "I want you."

Dante didn't need to hear another word. He crushed his lips against hers, kissing her with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole the breath from her lungs. It was a promise, a vow signed in blood and sealed with an unbreakable bond.

Weeks later, the Grand Aurelia Hotel hosted another massive charity gala. The ballroom was filled with politicians, socialites, and the city's elite.

Leah stood on the balcony overlooking the ballroom. She wasn't wearing a cheap, stained uniform or a busted shoe. She wore a stunning, custom-made crimson gown, diamonds resting against her collarbone. Dante stood beside her, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back, the undisputed king surveying his court.

A waiter walked by, carrying a tray of champagne. He looked exhausted, his shoes worn. Leah caught his eye and offered a small, knowing smile, slipping a hundred-dollar bill onto his tray.

Dante chuckled softly. "Still looking out for the staff?"

"Always," Leah smiled, leaning against his shoulder.

They looked out over the glittering city. The war was won. They had everything.

But down below, in the shadows of the hotel lobby, a man in a dark coat adjusted his collar. He pulled out a burner phone and sent a single text message to a number in Italy:

The Valerius King has a Queen. We have our new target.

The message sent, and the man disappeared into the night.
