Chapter 19 - The Dust Settles

The safehouse they fled to was a heavily fortified penthouse in the center of the financial district, owned by a shell corporation Dante controlled. For a week, Leah and Matteo didn't leave the apartment.
Outside, Dante Valerius unleashed hell.
The news was filled with reports of "gang violence" and "unexplained explosions" at Russian-owned warehouses on the docks. Dante systematically dismantled the Bratva's operations in the city, sending a brutal, uncompromising message to the criminal underworld: The King was untouched, and his family was off-limits.
By the eighth day, it was over. The head of the Russian syndicate requested a sit-down, begged for peace, and paid a massive tribute in blood and money to Dante.
When Dante finally returned to the penthouse, he looked like a man who had walked through fire. His knuckles were bruised, his eyes dark with exhaustion.
Leah was waiting for him in the living room. Matteo was asleep in the guest room, completely oblivious to the war that had just ended.
Dante walked over to the bar, pouring two glasses of whiskey. He handed one to Leah and collapsed onto the leather sofa.
"It's done," Dante said softly, staring into his glass. "The Bratva is broken. The city is mine again. No one will ever come after you."
Leah took a sip of the burning liquid, the heat grounding her. She looked at Dante—the man who had given her everything, the man who had killed for her, the man who owned her heart.
"I know," Leah said quietly.
"You can go back to a normal life now, if you want," Dante said, his voice tight, refusing to look at her. "I can set you up in a different city. Under a new name. You and Matteo can have a quiet, safe life. Far away from me."
The offer hung in the air, heavy and heartbreaking. He was giving her an out. He was offering to break his own heart to ensure she never had to hold a frying pan like a weapon again.

Leah set her glass down. She walked over to him, straddling his lap, and took the glass from his bruised hands.
"What makes you think I want a normal life?" Leah whispered.
