Chapter 17 - The Siege of the Brownstone

|

"Pack a bag. Now," Dante ordered, his voice echoing through the quiet house. "Get Matteo. We are leaving."

Leah didn't argue. She bolted up the stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs just like it had in the basement of the hotel. She burst into Matteo's room, shaking him gently awake.

"Hey, buddy. We have to go on a trip. Right now," she whispered, keeping her voice calm despite the panic choking her.

Downstairs, Dante was already moving. He pulled a hidden panel away from the living room wall, revealing a biometric safe. He pulled out two assault rifles and a stack of tactical magazines.

Before Leah could reach the bottom of the stairs with a sleepy Matteo in her arms, the front windows of the brownstone shattered inward.

Gunfire ripped through the expensive furniture. The deafening roar of automatic weapons tore the quiet suburban night apart.

"Get down!" Dante roared, grabbing Leah and dragging her behind the massive marble kitchen island.

Glass and wood rained down on them. Matteo started crying, terrified by the noise. Leah curled her body entirely over his, shielding him with her own flesh.

Dante popped up over the counter, returning fire with lethal precision. The heavy thumps of his rifle echoed rapidly. Two figures in black tactical gear collapsed on the front lawn, but more were swarming the property.

"Enzo is five minutes away with the cavalry," Dante shouted over the gunfire, reloading his weapon. "We just have to hold them off!"

"There are too many of them!" Leah screamed as a bullet shattered the refrigerator next to them, spraying them with cold water and Freon.

Dante looked at her, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, protective fury. "I am not letting you die in this house, Leah! Stay down!"

The back door suddenly splintered open. Three Russian hitters poured into the kitchen. Dante spun around, taking down two of them in a hail of bullets, but the third man managed to tackle Dante to the floor.

The rifle skittered across the tile. The Russian pulled a combat knife, raising it high above Dante's chest.

Leah saw the knife flash in the moonlight.
