Chapter 24 - The Second Arrest

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel descended into absolute, stunned silence as the heavy mahogany doors of the VIP hallway swung open. The classical orchestra faltered and stopped playing entirely. Hundreds of the city’s most elite and powerful citizens turned to watch the impossible unfold.
Silas Thorne, the mythical, untouchable titan of Wall Street, was being marched through the center of the ballroom in handcuffs, flanked by four federal agents. His face was completely ashen, his head bowed in utter humiliation. He did not look like an evil mastermind anymore; he looked like a broken, pathetic old man.
Maya walked a few paces behind the procession, her emerald gown trailing elegantly across the floor. She held her head high, her expression calm, fierce, and undeniably triumphant. Leo walked proudly beside her.
Whispers erupted like wildfire through the crowd.
"Is that Silas Thorne?"
"I thought he was retired in the Hamptons!"
"Did Maya Sterling just take him down too?"
As the agents paraded Silas past the main entrance, the press corps waiting outside erupted into a frenzy of flashing cameras and shouted questions. The billionaire was shoved roughly into the back of a black armored FBI SUV, the heavy doors slamming shut on his empire forever.
Maya stepped out onto the front steps of the hotel, the cool night air rushing over her. The camera flashes illuminated her face, capturing the image of a young woman who had just single-handedly decapitated the most corrupt financial syndicate in the city's history.
"Ms. Sterling! Was Silas Thorne involved with Victoria's crimes?" a reporter yelled over the chaotic din.
Maya stepped up to a cluster of microphones, her voice clear and ringing with finality.

"Silas Thorne and Victoria Sterling conspired to destroy my father's legacy for their own greed," Maya announced to the world. "Tonight, the final architect of that corruption has been brought to justice. The rot has been entirely excised. Sterling Enterprises is finally, truly clean."
The crowd erupted in a roar of questions, but Maya simply turned and walked back inside, a profound, overwhelming sense of peace settling over her heart. The war was over. She had won.
