Chapter 22 - The Confession

Silas stood completely relaxed, his weight resting comfortably on his silver cane. He looked at Maya with an expression of pure, arrogant amusement. He genuinely believed he had won. He believed that every person in the world, including Richard Sterling’s daughter, had a price tag.
"You think I brought you here to ask for a bribe?" Maya asked, her voice dropping into a low, deadly calm.
"Of course you did," Silas laughed, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "You are just like everyone else, Maya. You discovered the truth, and instead of running to the police with circumstantial evidence they could never prove in court, you called me. You want the money. You want the power. It's in your blood. I can make you the most powerful CEO in New York, as long as you understand who pulls the strings."
"You really think you are untouchable, don't you?"
"I know I am," Silas stated coldly. "I own politicians, judges, and federal regulators. Victoria is taking the fall because she is weak. I am the architect. I orchestrated your father's death, I drained his company, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, little girl. Because if you try to cross me, I will ruin you just like I ruined him."
Maya stared into his cold, dead eyes. She had waited years for this exact moment. She had endured the pain, the humiliation, and the despair, all building up to this single, perfect climax.
Maya smiled. It wasn't a smile of greed or fear. It was the triumphant, unshakeable smile of absolute justice.
"You are wrong about one thing, Silas," Maya said softly.
Silas frowned, his arrogant smirk faltering slightly. "And what is that?"
"I didn't invite you here to negotiate."

Maya reached up and unclasped the beautiful, diamond-studded brooch pinned to the lapel of her emerald gown. She held it up between them. Hidden perfectly within the intricate cluster of diamonds was a microscopic, military-grade camera and audio transmitter.
"I invited you here to confess."
