Chapter 19 - Setting the Trap

|
The Sterling Charity Gala was the most highly anticipated event of the season, held in the grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel. Thousands of white roses draped from the crystal chandeliers, and a classical orchestra played softly in the background. The room was filled with politicians, celebrities, and Wall Street titans, all buzzing with the recent drama surrounding the Sterling empire.
Maya stood near the entrance, looking absolutely breathtaking in a floor-length emerald green gown. She smiled warmly, shaking hands and graciously accepting congratulations for her new role as CEO.
To the untrained eye, she was the perfect, poised hostess. But beneath the silk and diamonds, Maya was coiled like a spring.
Leo approached her, wearing a sharp tuxedo and carrying two flutes of champagne. He handed one to Maya, his eyes constantly scanning the crowded room.
"Security is completely locked down," Leo whispered, leaning in close. "I have private guards at every exit, and a team of FBI agents parked in an unmarked surveillance van in the loading dock. The cameras in the VIP lounge are active and recording."
"Good," Maya replied, taking a small sip of champagne. "Has the target arrived?"
"Not yet. Are you sure he is going to take the bait, Maya? He might have realized it’s a trap."
"He will come," Maya said with absolute certainty. "Men like Silas Thorne are addicted to power. The thought of corrupting my father’s pristine legacy, of turning me into his new pawn, is entirely too tempting for him to resist."
Suddenly, a subtle shift rippled through the crowd near the main entrance. The chatter died down slightly as people parted to make way for a new arrival.
Maya looked up and felt her pulse quicken.
Walking through the grand archway was a tall, imposing man in his late sixties. He carried a silver-tipped walking cane, wearing a bespoke vintage tuxedo that screamed of old, untouchable money. His hair was stark white, and his eyes were as cold and dead as a shark's.
May you like
It was Silas Thorne.
He didn't look at the crowd. He locked eyes directly with Maya across the expansive ballroom, a chilling, predatory smirk forming on his face. The trap was set, and the prey had just walked willingly into the cage.
