Chapter 6 - The Grieving Fiancé

|

"What do you want me to do?" I asked Rachel, my eye scanning the darkened corners of the room.

"Stay unconscious," Rachel instructed. "When Logan comes in with the press tomorrow morning to play the tragic fiancé, play along. Let him think the shock and trauma have erased your memory of the attack. I'm going to send a private courier to your nurse with an encrypted phone. We communicate only through that."

"Rachel," I called out before she could hang up. "If you cross me, I will leak the cloud drive files to every news network in the country, even if it costs me my life."

"I know," she whispered. "That's why I know you're the only one who can help me kill his career."

The line went dead.

I hung up the receiver and pushed it back onto the cradle just as heavy footsteps echoed outside in the corridor.

I sank back into the pillows, closing my left eye and relaxing my jaw.

A moment later, the door creaked open, and the scent of expensive amber cologne washed over the bed once again. But this time, Logan wasn't alone. I heard the muffled camera shutters clicking from the doorway and the low, hushed tones of reporters standing behind a velvet security rope in the hallway.

"Please... give us a moment," Logan’s voice choked out, dripping with theatrical sorrow.

I heard him walk toward the bed. He sat down heavily in the bedside chair, letting out a ragged, trembling sob that would have won an Academy Award. He reached out and wrapped his warm fingers around my limp left hand.

"Oh, Maya..." Logan wept softly, loud enough for the camera lenses poking through the doorway to capture every drop of his anguish. "My sweet, beautiful Maya... why would anyone do this to you?"

He leaned down, pressing his face against my blanket, weeping bitterly.

I lay there, feeling the cold, sociopathic rhythm of his body. Underneath my bandages, a terrible, dark fire flared to life.

Cry all you want, Logan, I thought, keeping my body perfectly still. Enjoy the performance. Because when the curtain comes down, I am going to tear your world apart brick by brick.
