Chapter 1 - The Fire and the Silence

The smell of sterile antiseptic couldn't mask the metallic scent of burnt flesh. I lay perfectly still on the narrow hospital bed, the heavy linen sheets draped over my body like a shroud. Every millimeter of the right side of my face throbbed with a rhythmic, agonizing heat that felt like molten lead trapped beneath layers of thick white gauze.
I didn't open my eyes. I didn't let out a breath. I made my breathing as shallow and ragged as a dying engine.
Just hours earlier, the autumn air in Soho had been crisp and sweet. I had stepped out of a high-end bridal boutique, holding the silk swatch of my wedding dress, dreaming of the day I would walk down the aisle to marry Logan Vance. Logan—the nation’s favorite pop star, the man whose soulful eyes graced millions of bedroom posters, the man who had held my hand for five long years.
Then came the man in the dark overcoat.
"Excuse me, are you Maya? Logan asked me to give you this," he had murmured.
I remembered turning toward him with a warm, naive smile. I remembered the sudden flash of clear glass in his hand. And then came the blinding, roaring fire as the acid ate through my skin. I remembered my own frantic screaming, the horrifying sizzle of tissue, and the cold pavement rushing up to crash against my jaw before everything went dark.
Now, in the hyper-sanitized quiet of a private Manhattan hospital room, two familiar voices hovered near the foot of my bed.
"You could have just broken up with Maya!" Ryan, Logan's longtime talent manager, hissed in a panicky whisper. "You could have canceled the wedding! Why on earth would you pay someone to do this to her?!"
My heart stopped beating in my chest. My blood turned to liquid ice.
Logan replied with a calm, chilling detachment that froze me far worse than the hospital room’s air conditioning.
"Because if I dumped her a week before the wedding, the press and every fan would have hunted Rachel down," Logan said smoothly. "I needed Maya to be physically unable to show up. I needed the world to believe I was the devastated, heartbroken groom."

"You sick lunatic," Ryan gasped. "At least hire the best reconstructive surgeon in the city!"
"There’s no need," Logan dismissed casually. "If she’s permanently scarred, it’s actually better for me. I’ll support her. She’ll have a penthouse, endless money, private nurses. After something like this, who else do you think would ever want to leave me?"
