Chapter 11 - The Whistleblower's Ghost

While Rachel set up the mobile broadcast terminal on the hospital table, I pulled open the second file directory she had pulled from her father's server.
"There's a weak link in their chain," I said, scanning the document list. "Ryan."
"Logan's manager?" Rachel asked, plugging an antenna module into the laptop. "Why Ryan?"
"Ryan was in the room when Logan confessed to the attack," I explained. "Ryan called him a lunatic. He didn't want any part of the acid attack because he knew if it got out, he'd go to federal prison as an accessory."
I tapped a phone number into the burner phone—Ryan’s private line.
I hit dial and put it on speaker.
It rang three times before Ryan picked up, his voice hushed and anxious. "Hello? Who is this?"
"Hello, Ryan," I said softly.
Silence deadened the line. I could hear Ryan's breathing freeze completely.
"M... Maya?" he stammered, his voice dropping an octave in sheer terror. "How... how are you calling me? Logan said you were in an induced coma!"
"Logan lies about a lot of things, Ryan," I said coldly. "Like the twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy he forged my name on. Or the offshore account in the Cayman Islands he used to wire fifty thousand dollars to the man who threw acid in my face."
"I didn't know about the acid!" Ryan shrieked softly into the phone, clearly ducking into a private corner. "I swear to you, Maya! Logan told me he was just going to pay someone to stage a fake robbery so you’d miss the wedding! I didn't know he was going to burn you!"
"It doesn't matter what you knew, Ryan," I stated sharply. "In twenty minutes, Logan is holding a press conference downstairs. If you don't walk onto that stage and publicly state that Logan forged my trust documents, I am releasing the recorded conversation from my hospital room directly to the FBI."

"He'll destroy me, Maya! Victor Mercer will have me killed!"
"Victor Mercer is going to be in handcuffs by sunset," I replied. "Choose your side, Ryan. Right now."
