Chapter 41 - A Better Ending

|

Five years later.

The spring sunlight touched the rolling green hills of the Hudson Valley estate, just as it had on the day they dismantled the empire. The massive iron gates stood open, welcoming a steady stream of vans and cars. The Elena Vale Sanctuary was thriving, expanding its reach, offering absolute safety to hundreds of families who desperately needed a quiet place to heal.

The great hall was completely transformed. The marble floors were covered in soft rugs, and the walls were adorned with bright, vibrant paintings—most of them donated by Mia’s successful gallery in Vermont.

Lily stood by the massive front doors, watching the children play in the courtyard. She was twenty-seven now, acting as the primary director of the foundation. She wore a simple yellow dress, a quiet tribute to Harper, who was currently studying in Europe, and to the innocence they had all fought to protect.

Victoria stood beside her, leaning heavily on her cane, her sharp eyes taking in the chaotic, beautiful scene.

"It is loud today," Victoria observed, though there was a clear fondness in her tone.

"It is a good loud," Lily smiled, touching the silver bird pendant resting at her throat.

They both turned as a car pulled up to the main steps. Daniel stepped out of the driver's seat, moving a little slower than he used to, and opened the rear door.

Dominic stepped out. He used a dark wooden cane now, his body finally betraying the immense toll of his past, but his eyes remained sharp, completely clear of the shadows that had once haunted them.

He walked slowly up the marble steps, stopping beside Lily. He looked out over the courtyard, at the sanctuary he had built from the ashes of his own destruction.

"You are doing exceptional work here, Lily," Dominic said, his voice quiet but carrying immense weight.

"We are doing it together," Lily corrected, linking her arm through his.

Dominic looked at his daughter, then at the sprawling, safe house that had replaced his fortress of fear. He thought of Elena’s drawing, of the dark nursery, of the seventeen years of silence. All of it was gone.

He squeezed Lily’s arm, leaning heavily on his cane, and smiled.

"Yes," Dominic said softly, watching a little girl in a blue dress chase a butterfly across the grass. "This is exactly where the story begins."
