Chapter 24 - Snow in April

|
The Vermont cabin was situated at the end of a long, winding dirt road, surrounded by towering pines and a vast, pristine lake. Just as the local meteorologists had predicted, a freak late-April storm had blanketed the valley in six inches of pure, glittering white snow.
Harper was in her element. She wore a bright yellow snowsuit that made her look like a tiny sun navigating through the winter landscape. She was currently attempting to construct a snowman, though it looked more like a lopsided pyramid.
Mia stood on the wooden porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. She watched her daughter with a profound sense of peace. The anxiety that had once lived permanently in her chest was slowly beginning to uncoil.
The sound of an engine breaking the silence made Mia stiffen slightly. A black SUV crept up the snowy driveway, coming to a smooth halt near the porch.
Dominic stepped out. He wore a heavy wool overcoat, his dark hair dusted with falling snowflakes. In his hands, he carried a large, pristine white bakery box tied with a thick red ribbon.
Harper dropped her handful of snow and gasped.
"Mr. Vale! You brought the cake!"
Dominic offered a genuine, warm smile as the little girl waddled quickly toward him in her bulky snowsuit.
"I never break a promise, Harper. Especially regarding baked goods."
Mia walked down the wooden steps, the snow crunching softly beneath her boots. She looked at Dominic, assessing the changes in him over the past month. The ruthless mafia boss was gone. In his place was a man actively learning how to carry his grief without turning it into a weapon.
"You actually came," Mia said, stopping a few feet away.
"I said I would."
"Vanilla or chocolate?" she asked, gesturing to the box.
"Both. It seemed like the safest diplomatic choice."
Mia laughed softly, the sound carrying clearly in the crisp air. It was a beautiful sound.

"Come inside," Mia said, stepping aside to lead the way. "It’s freezing, and Harper has been demanding sugar since six o'clock this morning."
They sat at the rustic wooden dining table, eating cake while Harper babbled excitedly about her lopsided snowman. For the first time in his life, Dominic sat in a room entirely devoid of secrets, violence, or hidden agendas. He ate his cake, listened to the laughter of a child, and realized that Elena’s final wish was finally coming true. The story was starting over.
