Chapter 37 - The Monument

|

The cemetery in upstate New York was quiet, the ancient oak trees casting long, dappled shadows across the manicured green lawns. Dominic walked slowly down the paved path, carrying a massive bouquet of white lilies. He was not alone. Lily walked beside him, her arm linked comfortably through his. Mia and Harper walked a few paces behind them, maintaining a respectful distance.

For seventeen years, Elena’s grave had been a monument to Dominic’s failure and his rage. He had visited it often, making silent promises of violence and revenge. But today, the visit felt entirely different. Today, he was bringing her daughter.

They stopped before the ornate marble headstone.

Elena Ashford Vale. Beloved Wife.

Lily stood before the grave of the mother she had never known. She touched the cool marble, reading the name over and over. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the small wooden box containing the drawing Father Bellamy had delivered.

She carefully opened the box, taking out the yellowed, fragile piece of paper. She knelt in the soft grass and placed the drawing gently at the base of the headstone, securing it beneath a small, smooth river stone.

Do not let the story end in the room where they hurt us.

"We didn't," Lily whispered to the silent earth. "We got out, Mom. We are all out."

Dominic stepped forward, laying the white lilies over the grave. He looked at the drawing, then down at the daughter who carried Elena's exact, fiercely compassionate eyes. He felt a profound sense of closure wash over him, a physical release of tension he had carried in his jaw for nearly two decades.

"She would be incredibly proud of the woman you have become, Lily," Dominic said quietly. "You saved us all."

Lily stood up, turning to face him. She didn't hesitate. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Dominic in a tight, unconditional embrace. Dominic froze for a fraction of a second before bringing his strong arms up, holding his daughter tightly against his chest, closing his eyes as a single tear escaped down his weathered face.

From a few feet away, Harper watched the hug, smiling brightly. The story had not ended in the dark. It had ended in the light.
