Chapter 30 - The Grand Opening

|
The great hall of the Hudson Valley estate was filled with light, laughter, and the scent of wild lilies. It was the exact opposite of the silent, tense gathering that had taken place here a year prior. Today marked the official opening of the Elena Vale Sanctuary.
Local politicians, doctors, social workers, and families filled the space. There were no armed guards in tailored suits lurking in the corners. Instead, children ran freely across the marble floors, their voices echoing off the high ceilings.
Lily stood near the grand staircase, wearing a simple white dress, the silver bird pendant resting against her collarbone. She watched Dominic navigating the crowd. He looked deeply uncomfortable receiving praise from the local mayor, his jaw tight, but he endured it with surprising grace.
Mia walked up beside Lily, handing her a glass of sparkling cider. Harper was currently dragging Daniel by the hand toward the dessert table, completely oblivious to his intimidating stature.
"He looks like he would rather be in a firefight than a photo op," Mia noted, smiling as she watched Dominic awkwardly shake hands with a social worker.
"He is trying," Lily said, her eyes softening. "He tore down his entire life to build this. I think he is allowed to be a little uncomfortable."
"Are you?" Mia asked gently. "Uncomfortable being back here?"
Lily looked around the massive hall. She remembered the sheer terror of sneaking up these stairs, the suffocating darkness of the hidden nursery. But as she looked at the bright, open space, she realized the fear was gone. The house had been exorcised.
"No," Lily answered truthfully. "It doesn't feel like the same place. The monsters are gone."
Dominic finally managed to excuse himself from the crowd and walked over to them. He looked at Lily, his expression softening entirely.
"Are you enjoying the event?" he asked.
"It is beautiful, Dominic. The clinic is perfect."
"It is," he agreed. He looked at Mia, then back at Lily. "I want you both to know that this foundation belongs to a trust in Lily's name. When I am gone, you will control it. You will ensure the doors stay open."
May you like
Lily reached out and placed her hand over his.
"We will," she promised. "But you aren't going anywhere for a long time."
