Chapter 27 - The Final Plea

|

The federal courthouse in Manhattan was heavily guarded, a fortress of limestone and marble. The press had gathered on the steps, hungry for the final chapter of the Cross-Vale syndicate collapse. But the proceedings inside Courtroom 3B were surprisingly quiet and anticlimactic.

Claire Bennett stood before the judge, wearing a standard-issue gray jumpsuit that hung loosely on her frame. She was no longer pregnant. The child had been born a month ago and, true to Dominic’s promise, had been quietly placed into the closed adoption system, safely vanishing from the syndicate's radar forever.

Dominic sat in the very back row of the gallery, wearing a dark suit, his presence commanding the room without a single word being spoken. He watched the woman who had helped betray his family face the absolute weight of her choices.

"Ms. Bennett," the judge said, looking over his spectacles. "You are entering a plea of guilty to the charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and accessory to kidnapping. Do you understand that this plea carries a mandatory minimum sentence of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary?"

Claire’s voice was hollow, stripped of the manipulative edge it once possessed. "Yes, Your Honor."

"And are you entering this plea willingly, without coercion?"

Claire turned slightly, her eyes finding Dominic in the back of the room. He did not glare at her. He did not smile. He simply watched her with the detached certainty of a man who had already buried the past.

"Yes," Claire said, turning back to the judge. "I am guilty."

The gavel fell with a sharp, echoing crack, sealing her fate. The bailiffs stepped forward to escort Claire out of the courtroom.

As she passed the gallery, she paused for a fraction of a second near Dominic’s row.

"He has your eyes," she whispered so softly only Dominic could hear. "The baby. He has Elena's eyes."

Dominic felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest, a ghost of a life that could have been. But he quickly forced the emotion down, replacing it with resolve.

"He has his own eyes now," Dominic replied quietly. "And he will never know the dark."

Claire nodded, a single tear escaping down her cheek, and let the guards lead her away into the shadows. Dominic stood up and walked out into the bright sunlight, leaving the final ghost of Nathan Cross behind him in the dark.
