Chapter 6 - The Ironclad Firewall

The morning after I discovered the forgery, I met with Naomi Feld.

Naomi was a legend in the corporate legal world. She was a sixty-year-old attorney with silver hair cut into a sharp bob, piercing gray eyes, and a reputation for tearing unethical executives to pieces in courtroom battles.

She reviewed the forged loan documents David Quinn, my forensic accountant, had compiled.

"Your husband isn't just drowning in debt, Elise," Naomi said, placing the files neatly on her mahogany desk. "He's running a shadow enterprise. He's taking out high-interest private loans, paying off older debts with new capital, and using your reputation as his personal shield."

"What are my options?" I asked.

"Option one: We file for divorce today, go to the authorities, and have him indicted for forgery. But it will be loud, public, and it will tank Northstar's upcoming Series C funding round."

"Option two?"

Naomi leaned back, a cold, calculating smile playing on her lips.

"Option two: We construct a legal fortress. We restructure Northstar Metrics into an independent offshore holding trust that pre-dates your marriage's appreciation value. We place your residential estate into a private family foundation with you as the sole trustee. Then, we present him with a comprehensive postnuptial agreement."

"Grant will never sign a postnuptial agreement," I noted. "He's too paranoid."

"He will sign it if his ego demands it," Naomi countered smoothly. "We frame the postnuptial agreement as a protective measure to shield his future investments from Northstar's corporate liabilities. We make him think we are protecting him from you."

Two weeks later, I sat across from Grant at our dining table.

I handed him a glass of scotch and a thick legal folder. I told him our corporate board was demanding a clear separation of marital assets before approving a massive international expansion. I told him it would legally insulate his personal business ventures if Northstar ever faced a federal audit.

Grant barely skimmed the pages. He saw the words Asset Protection, Independently Held Entities, and Mutual Liability Shield.

He smiled, stroked my cheek, and signed every single page with a flourishes of his gold fountain pen.

"I knew you were just doing what's best for us, baby," he said, taking a sip of his scotch. "We have to protect our kingdom."

He had no idea he had just formally renounced every legal claim to my company, my house, my bank accounts, and my intellectual property.

From that day forward, Grant Holloway was legally on his own island. And the waters around him were rising fast.
