Chapter 16 - The Secret Phone

I picked up the plastic bag containing the encrypted phone. My heart, which had been so steady for days, began to beat with a cold, sharp rhythm.
"Show me," I said.
Ivy reached across the table with trembling fingers, swiped the screen, and navigated to an encrypted messaging application called Signal.
The chat log was between Grant and a user listed only as Viper-09. Naomi's investigators had already identified Viper-09 as Oliver Crane—a disgraced former hedge-fund manager who specialized in corporate sabotage and black-market extortion.
The messages were dated just four days before Grant’s death.
Grant: "Elise’s board is getting suspicious. Her internal auditors are closing in on my Marrowline accounts. I need to trigger the backup plan now."
Viper-09: "Did you plant the modified cryptographic key in her private workstation?"
Grant: "Yes. The script is hidden inside her core Northstar security update. When she deploys it on Friday, it will look like she intentionally opened a backdoor for foreign buyers."
Viper-09: "Good. Once the leak hits the dark web, we leak the fake wire transfers showing she received $20 million in offshore accounts. Her board will panic, the SEC will indict her, and she’ll be forced to sell Northstar at a fire-sale price to our holding group."
Grant: "Make sure the press frames her as a traitor. I want her utterly ruined. I want her begging me to help her settle out of court."
Viper-09: "And what about your cut?"
Grant: "I take 40% of the takeover pool, buy out my parents' debts, and disappear to South America. Let Elise rot in a federal prison."
I stared at the glowing screen. The words swam before my eyes in blinding blue light.
It hadn't just been financial theft. It hadn't just been infidelity.
Grant Holloway had been actively framing me for treason and corporate espionage. He had planted a malicious backdoor inside my company's core software—a kill-switch designed to destroy my reputation, bankrupt my enterprise, and send me to federal prison for decades, just so he could walk away rich.
He hadn't died a tragic, accidental death. He had died days before executing a cold-blooded assassination of my entire life.
"Ms. Rowan?" Ivy whispered, watching my pale face. "Are you okay?"
I slowly closed the phone, placed it safely inside my handbag, and looked across the table at the trembling young woman.
"Why did you give this to me, Ivy?" I asked softly.
Ivy wiped a tear from her cheek. "Because he was going to destroy you. You built something amazing, Ms. Rowan. Everyone in the city knows how hard you worked. Grant was a parasite. He was going to wipe you out and make you take the fall for everything he did. I couldn't live with myself knowing I held the proof."
I looked at her for a long moment. The anger that had burned inside me toward this girl evaporated entirely, leaving behind only a profound, quiet solidarity.

"You did the right thing, Ivy," I said, reaching out to place a hand over hers. "Now, listen to me very carefully."
