Chapter 3 - The Demands of the Holloways

I stood anchored to the floor, holding the plastic bag containing Grant's final earthly possessions. I looked at Celia's painted face, then at Bernard's puffed-out chest.

"If you're done assigning blame," I said quietly, "you should focus on making his funeral arrangements."

"Oh, we will handle the funeral," Celia sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. "Because if we leave it to you, you'll probably bury him in a cardboard box to save a dollar. But let us get one thing crystal clear right now, Elise."

"I'm listening."

"Grant's legacy belongs to us," Bernard stated, his voice booming down the empty corridor. "His real estate, his private investments, his offshore accounts, his equity in Northstar Metrics. Every single penny he left behind comes straight back to the Holloway family."

I squinted slightly, watching the desperate hunger in their eyes. They didn't know yet. They truly believed Grant was the wealthy titan he pretended to be on social media. They thought his tailored suits, custom sports cars, and high-stakes venture deals were paid for by his own brilliant business mind.

They didn't realize that every single luxury Grant enjoyed had been subsidized by my sweat, or financed through massive, predatory loans he had taken out behind my back.

"You want his entire estate?" I asked, allowing a beat of silence to fall between us.

"Every cent," Celia demanded, stepping closer. "We know how much money Grant built. We know he was the secret architect behind your firm's success. You will not steal his life's work from his grieving parents."

"Every asset, every account, every single piece of paper tied to his name?" I repeated, making sure the guard and the attending nurse heard every word. "You want complete ownership of Grant's estate?"

"Are you deaf?" Celia snapped. "Yes! We want everything he left behind! And if you try to fight us in probate court, we will drag your name through every tabloid in the country. We will make sure the business world knows what kind of monster you really are."

I looked down at the plastic bag in my hands. Then I looked up, offering them a small, icy smile that didn't reach my eyes.

"There's no need to fight," I said softly. "Come to my attorney's office in three days. Bring your lawyer. I will give you every single thing Grant left behind."

Celia blinked, caught off guard by my sudden surrender. Bernard exchanged a quick, triumphant glance with his wife.

"Smart girl," Bernard muttered, adjusting his tie. "At least you know when you're beaten."

"Three days," Celia warned, pointing at me one last time. "Don't be late."

They turned on their heels and walked out of the hospital, their footsteps echoing with arrogant victory. They thought they had just intimidated a grieving widow into surrendering a fortune.

They had no idea they had just demanded the keys to a sinking ship packed with dynamite.
