Chapter 20 - The Unfinished Blueprint

|
A month had passed since the U-Haul sputtered away from the estate.
I was sitting in my sprawling, glass-walled corner office at Vanguard & Sterling, looking out over the glittering, vibrant Manhattan skyline. I had recently been promoted to full Partner, recognizing the brilliant, ruthless efficiency I brought to my architectural projects.
Apex Holdings had officially liquidated the Adams family properties, turning a massive, quiet profit. My personal bank accounts were incredibly robust, my career was soaring, and I had permanently excised the toxic rot of my family from my life. I felt victorious. I felt completely, utterly untouchable.
I was reviewing a new blueprint for a commercial skyscraper when a sudden, encrypted notification popped up on my private, highly secure personal computer monitor.
It wasn't a standard email. It was a direct, localized server override.
A single line of stark green text appeared on a pitch-black screen.
> "Apex Holdings executed a flawless demolition, Catherine."
My blood ran instantly cold. I sat up straight, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. No one, absolutely no one besides Marcus Thorne, knew that I was the phantom CEO behind Apex Holdings. I had buried the corporate paperwork beneath layers of impenetrable legal shell companies.
Before I could even attempt to trace the IP address, my secure, unlisted desk phone began to ring.
I stared at it for three long rings before finally picking up the receiver.
"Who is this?" I demanded, keeping my voice dangerously steady.
A low, smooth, incredibly powerful voice chuckled on the other end of the line. It was a voice that commanded absolute, unquestioning authority.
"You are an exceptionally talented architect, Catherine Adams," the mysterious man said smoothly. "Most architects only know how to build. Very few possess the brilliant, ruthless vision required to completely, systematically dismantle a foundation from the inside out."
"How did you get this number?" I asked, my mind racing.
"I have resources that make your regional bank acquisitions look like child's play," the voice replied calmly. "I've been quietly monitoring your hostile takeover of Adams Development for the last few months. It was a masterful display of predatory acquisition."
"What do you want?"
"You successfully tore down a house, Catherine," the billionaire said, his voice dropping into a serious, heavily weighted register. "But I have a much more complicated project in mind."
"I'm listening."
"A rival conglomerate is currently built on a deeply corrupted, dangerous financial foundation. It needs to be demolished quietly, piece by piece, before they realize the wrecking ball is even in the building."
The man paused, letting the silence hang heavy in the air between us.
"You tore down a house, Catherine," he repeated softly. "Want to help me tear down an empire?"
May you like
I looked out at the sprawling, endless skyline of New York City, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face. The first blueprint was finished, but the drafting table was never truly empty.
"Send me the files," I said.
