Chapter 15 - The Reveal

|

By Monday morning, my father was entirely out of options. His business was gone, the house was weeks away from foreclosure, and the auction had been a complete disaster. He was a desperate, drowning man looking for a single piece of driftwood.

He reached out directly to the corporate law firm representing Apex Holdings, begging for a face-to-face meeting with the anonymous CEO. He pleaded for a restructuring deal, a grace period, anything to stop the final seizure of his remaining assets.

My proxy lawyer, acting on my strict instructions, finally agreed to grant him an audience.

My father was told to arrive at a high-end corporate boardroom in downtown Manhattan at 10:00 AM sharp.

I arrived an hour early. I sat at the head of the massive, polished mahogany table, my back facing the heavy glass doors. I spun the high-backed leather chair around, looking out over the sprawling city skyline, waiting patiently in the silence.

At exactly 10:00 AM, the boardroom doors clicked open.

I heard my father’s heavy, defeated footsteps enter the room, accompanied by my proxy lawyer.

"Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me," my father began, his voice dripping with subservience and fear. "I know Adams Development has hit a rough patch, but I assure you, if Apex Holdings just gives me a six-month extension, I can secure new funding. I can fix the structural issues. Please, you're taking my family's home."

I remained facing the window, letting him beg. Letting him lay his pathetic desperation bare in the quiet room.

"I am a man who respects hard work," my father pleaded, his voice cracking slightly. "I built my company from the ground up. I just need a little bit of mercy. I'll agree to whatever interest rates you want."

I placed my hands on the armrests of the leather chair.

"You didn't build your company from the ground up, Dad," I said, my voice echoing coldly off the glass walls. "You built it by cutting corners, taking out fraudulent loans, and prioritizing your ego over structural integrity."

The silence in the room became absolute. The breathing behind me stopped entirely.

I slowly swiveled the heavy leather chair around to face the room.

My father stared at me, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated shock. His jaw dropped open, but no words came out. He looked from me, to the corporate lawyer standing silently by the door, and back to me.

"Hello, Dad," I said, folding my hands neatly on the mahogany table. "Welcome to Apex Holdings."
