Chapter 10 - The Debt Calls

|

The pressure was finally reaching a boiling point.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, my father arrived at his cramped Adams Development office to find a thick, certified legal package waiting on his desk.

The package was from Apex Holdings LLC.

As he tore open the envelope, his heart must have dropped into his stomach. The legal documents formally notified him that his primary commercial loan—the massive debt keeping his flagship shopping center afloat—had been aggressively acquired by Apex Holdings.

Furthermore, the documents explicitly outlined an immediate, mandatory financial audit of the construction site due to "concerns regarding structural compliance and code violations."

Apex Holdings had legally triggered a covenant in the loan agreement. We demanded a full inspection of the load-bearing beams within forty-eight hours.

If the inspector found the illegal, unapproved structural changes my father had made to save money, the project would be permanently halted. The loan would immediately default, and Apex Holdings would seize the property, forcing Adams Development into absolute, inescapable bankruptcy.

My father was completely cornered. He needed money. He needed capital to quickly bribe a contractor to fix the structural beams before the Apex inspector arrived, but his credit was maxed out, his club dues were bouncing, and his house was double-mortgaged.

Desperation breeds severe amnesia.

My cell phone rang at 2:00 PM. The caller ID displayed my father's name. It was the very first time he had called me since the night of the gala, six months ago.

I let it ring three times, smiling coldly, before answering.

"Hello, Dad," I said, keeping my voice entirely neutral.

"Catherine! Sweetheart!" his voice boomed through the speaker, dripping with fake, desperate affection. "How is my favorite architect doing in the big city? I hear Vanguard & Sterling is treating you incredibly well!"

He checked my LinkedIn, I realized. He saw the prestigious firm name. He knew I was making significant money now.

"I'm doing very well, Dad. I'm incredibly busy. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Well, you know, I just wanted to hear your voice," he lied smoothly. "And, actually, I find myself in a bit of a temporary, minor cash flow situation. A short-term liquidity hiccup with the new development. I was wondering if my successful daughter might be able to float her old man a small, temporary loan?"

I closed my eyes, savoring the absolute absurdity of the request.

"How much do you need, Dad?" I asked quietly.
