Chapter 17 - The Mother's Breakdown

|
News travels incredibly fast when a patriarch falls.
Within hours of the boardroom meeting, my father had clearly returned home and confessed the horrifying truth to my mother. He told her that her own daughter—the "ungrateful mistake"—was the ruthless, faceless entity systematically dismantling their entire gilded existence.
I expected an angry phone call. I did not expect a physical ambush.
The next morning, I was sitting in my corner office at Vanguard & Sterling, reviewing a massive new architectural contract, when I heard shouting in the reception area.
"I am her mother! Let me go!" a shrill, hysterical voice echoed down the glass corridor.
My office door burst open, and my mother stormed in, her face contorted in absolute, primal fury. She looked completely unhinged. Her designer hair was a mess, her makeup was smudged, and she was breathing heavily. Two security guards were hot on her heels, reaching out to grab her.
"It's fine," I told the guards, raising a hand. "I'll handle this. Wait outside."
The guards stepped back, closing the glass door and leaving me alone with the woman who had terrorized me my entire life.
"You evil, vindictive little bitch!" my mother screamed, marching toward my desk. "You planned this! You stole our house! You stole your father's business! You ruined our lives!"
"I didn't steal anything, Mother. I bought it," I corrected her calmly, not rising from my chair. "It was entirely legal. Dad defaulted on his loans because he's a terrible businessman."
"I am going to destroy you!" she shrieked, entirely losing her mind.
She lunged forward across my desk, her hand raised high, aiming to slap me exactly as she had done in the country club foyer all those months ago. She expected me to flinch. She expected me to take it.
But I wasn't the scared, broke student anymore.
Before her hand could even connect, I reached up and caught her wrist in mid-air. I gripped her arm with absolute, bone-crushing force, stopping her strike completely dead.
She gasped in shock, her eyes widening as she tried to pull away, but I held her tight.
"Do not ever raise your hand to me again," I whispered, my voice dropping to a lethal, chilling calm. "The last time you dug your nails into my face, it cost you your reputation, your husband's business, and your mansion. If you touch me today, I will make sure the police press assault charges, and you can spend your newly impoverished life in a jail cell."
I shoved her arm away violently. She stumbled backward, clutching her wrist, looking at me with genuine, unadulterated terror.

"You don't belong here," I said, echoing her own cruel words back to her. "Security will escort you out."
I pressed the button under my desk. The guards immediately entered and physically dragged my sobbing, broken mother out of the building.
