Chapter 8 - The Hallway of Power

The private surgical wing of St. Aurelia was usually a sanctuary of hushed whispers and nervous pacing. But the heavy double doors at the far end of the corridor did not simply open—they were shoved aside with an absolute, undeniable authority that made every head turn.
The men who entered first wore tailored dark suits, subtle earpieces, and the cold, unblinking eyes of elite security professionals trained to scan for threats before acknowledging faces. Behind them walked a formidable phalanx of older men and women in expensive coats, their collective presence so heavy that the hallway seemed to physically contract around them.
Evelyn blinked in surprise. She recognized several of them instantly. They were titans of industry whose faces graced the covers of financial journals and Forbes lists—the Board of Governors of Armitage Global Holdings, the private conglomerate Evelyn loved to describe as an "old family concern."
Yet, as they walked past Evelyn’s leather chair, none of them gave her even a sideways glance. They didn't nod. They didn't offer polite condolences. They lined both sides of the corridor outside the operating room, hands clasped behind their backs, heads respectfully lowered.
Evelyn’s aristocratic blood ran cold. She stood up, smoothing her suit jacket with an indignant flick of her wrists. "What is the meaning of this?" she demanded, her voice cutting sharply through the silence. "This is a private family matter! How dare you trespass in this wing?"
No one answered. The board members stood like statues of granite.
