Chapter 13 - Secrets in the Folds of a Sweater

|

For a long time, neither of us spoke. We simply lay together in the quiet sunlight, listening to the miraculous sound of our son breathing against my chest. But the peace of the room could not wash away the ghosts of the morning.

Memory returned in jagged fragments—Evelyn’s cruel whisper, the vertigo of the fall, the iron taste of blood, the terrifying drop down the stairs. My body stiffened instinctively, causing the bedside monitors to quicken their beeping pace.

Julian noticed instantly. He looked up, his eyes heavy with sorrow. "Clara?"

"She pushed me," I said, my voice trembling with residual trauma. "She pushed me down the stairs, Julian. She said... she said if I didn't lose the baby, I’d lose my life. She said you needed a wealthy wife."

His face didn't register surprise; it registered a deep, aching grief that had already anticipated the truth.

"I know," he said softly.

"You know?"

He gently took my hand, avoiding the IV line. "The mansion’s security system recorded every second. I should have told you about the cameras. I should have told you about so many things."

"Your mother," I whispered, the name tasting like ash. "Where is she?"

"In federal custody," Julian replied firmly. "No bail. No private influence. No corrupt family lawyers."

I closed my eyes, a cold knot of dread settling in my stomach. "She’ll find a way out. People like her always do."

"Not this time," Julian said, and the winter steel returned to his voice, quiet and absolute. "The evidence is watertight. The delay in calling for help is documented. The board has stripped her of every foundation, charitable trust, and social seat she used as armor. Her accounts are frozen while federal investigators audit decades of her finances."

"Decades of what?" I opened my eyes, staring at him. "What else did she do?"

Julian looked toward the window, his expression shadowing with a dark burden he had carried alone for years. "My father’s death ten years ago... it was never an accident on that Swiss mountain. I suspected it for a long time. Now, we finally have the proof."
