Chapter 20 - Walking Forward

|

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the halls of our downtown center grew quiet, I stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the city skyline. The night air was cool, carrying the faint, salty scent of the ocean from the nearby docks.

Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a familiar, warm wool sweater draped gently over my shoulders. Julian wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder as we looked out at the twinkling lights of the metropolis below.

"Penny for your thoughts, Chairman Armitage," I whispered, leaning back into his embrace.

Julian chuckled, a warm, rich sound that always made me feel safe. "I was just thinking about a woman who walked into my life with muddy shoes, a stubborn spirit, and a heart too big for her own good."

"And what did that woman teach you?" I asked with a smile.

"She taught me," Julian murmured, kissing my cheek, "that true strength isn't about the name you inherit, but the family you fight to build every single day."

Down the hall, the soft gurgle of a waking toddler drifted from the nursery monitor—our son, growing up in a world where secrets had no power and love was never conditional.

We had survived the fall. But as I looked ahead toward the horizon, hand in hand with the man who had traded an empire for my hand, I knew the best part of our story was still waiting to be written.
