Chapter 5 - The decryption

The following morning, the estate hummed with a dark, frantic energy. I walked down the grand marble staircase, no longer carrying a silver tray, but holding my head high. The guards stationed in the foyer didn't ignore me; they nodded respectfully, their eyes vigilant.
Gabriel met me at the bottom of the stairs, his face a grim mask of exhaustion.
“Damian is waiting for us in the subterranean server room,” Gabriel said, motioning for me to follow him. “We finally cracked the encryption on your father’s micro-SD card.”
We descended three flights of concrete stairs into a highly secured, climate-controlled bunker beneath the mansion. Damian was standing in front of a bank of massive, glowing monitors, flanked by three cyber-security specialists who looked completely terrified.
Damian turned as I entered, his eyes softening marginally before returning to their lethal, calculating focus.
“What was on it?” I asked, stepping up beside him, staring at the lines of complex code cascading down the screens.
“Your father was not just a freelance accountant, Harper,” Damian explained, his voice echoing in the cold room. “He was the primary bookkeeper for the Volkov syndicate. The Russian mob. He handled their offshore laundering, their bribery accounts, and their assassination payrolls.”
My stomach churned violently. My quiet, nervous father had been working for the most brutal criminal organization on the Eastern Seaboard.
“When he died,” Damian continued, pointing to a specific file on the screen, “the Volkovs believed he took his secrets to the grave. But this drive is a master ledger. It contains the names of every corrupt politician, judge, and police commissioner on their payroll. It is a roadmap to completely dismantle their entire empire.”
“And they found out I had it,” I whispered, the crushing weight of the realization stealing the air from my lungs.
“They didn't just find out,” Gabriel interjected, crossing his massive arms. “The drive also contains the access codes to a series of untraceable Swiss bank accounts holding over four hundred million dollars in illicit funds. Your father didn't just steal their secrets, Harper. He stole their war chest.”
I stared at the screen, my hands shaking. I was the sole heir to a fortune built on blood, and the entire Russian mafia was hunting me to get it back.

“We have to destroy it,” I said frantically, looking at Damian. “We have to wipe the drive and tell them it’s gone!”
“No,” Damian replied, his dark eyes burning with absolute, terrifying ambition. “We don't destroy power, Harper. We use it. The Volkovs want to start a war over this ledger. I am going to finish it.”
