Chapter 19 - The New Order

|

The aftermath of the pier shootout shifted the entire dynamic of the Chicago underworld.

The Volkov syndicate, reeling from the loss of their primary contractor and completely paralyzed by the devastating malware Gabriel had successfully uploaded into their networks during the chaos, retreated entirely from the city. Damian’s power was absolute, unrivaled, and cemented in the blood of his enemies.

But the victory felt different. The estate was no longer a cold, terrifying fortress; it was a home.

Six months later, I stood in the grand foyer of the mansion, looking at the exact spot where I had slapped Damian on that fateful night. The marble floors gleamed, and the air smelled of fresh flowers rather than gunpowder.

I was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform. I wore a stunning, tailored white pantsuit, holding a leather portfolio. I wasn't just the boss's partner; I had taken over the legitimate, philanthropic arm of the Romano empire, funneling millions of dollars of clean money into battered women’s shelters and community centers across the city.

Damian walked down the grand staircase, wearing his sharp, charcoal suit, adjusting his cuffs. He stopped at the bottom of the stairs, his dark eyes sweeping over me with that familiar, intense, possessing heat.

"You look like a CEO," Damian smiled, closing the distance between us, wrapping his arms around my waist.

"I look like a woman who finally owns her own life," I corrected gently, resting my hands on his broad chest, leaning up to kiss his jawline.

"You own much more than that, mia regina," Damian murmured, pulling back slightly to look deeply into my eyes.

He reached into his jacket pocket, producing a small, sleek black velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat. My heart hammered a frantic, joyful rhythm against my ribs.

Damian didn't drop to one knee. That wasn't who we were. He stood tall, opening the box to reveal a massive, flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the sunlight pouring through the massive windows.

"I promised you that I would protect you from the shadows," Damian said, his voice dropping into a solemn, incredibly vulnerable register. "I promised I would teach you how to stand in the light. But the truth is, Harper, you are the light. You saved me from the darkness of my own making."

Tears of profound, overwhelming joy spilled over my lashes.

"I don't want you to just be the woman I protect," Damian continued fiercely. "I want you to be my wife. I want you to be the queen of this empire, by my side, forever. Marry me, Harper."

May you like

"Yes," I whispered, laughing through the tears. "Yes, Damian. Absolutely yes."

He slid the heavy, beautiful ring onto my finger, sealing the promise with a deep, passionate kiss that tasted like victory and absolute, unshakeable devotion.
