Chapter 16 - The Decoy Strategy

|

I stared at the black phone resting on the table, my vision blurring with tears of absolute panic. Sarah was an innocent civilian. She had a toddler. She was going to die a brutal, terrifying death simply because she had been kind to me.

"We are not negotiating with him," Damian stated coldly, pacing the room. "It is a trap, Harper. The moment you hand over the ledger, he will execute you both to silence the loose ends."

"I can't let her die, Damian!" I shouted, standing up, the sheer desperation fueling my anger. "She saved my life when I was broken and starving in Milwaukee! She gave me the money to escape him! I owe her my life, and I am not going to let him slaughter her because of my father's sins!"

"I am not going to let you walk into a firing squad!" Damian roared back, closing the distance between us, his massive hands gripping my shoulders. "You are my world, Harper. If I lose you, the rest of this empire means absolutely nothing to me."

The raw, devastating honesty in his voice broke the tension. I looked up into his dark, tormented eyes, seeing the terrifying vulnerability of a man who refused to lose the only light in his dark life.

"I am not asking you to let me die, Damian," I whispered, reaching up to gently touch his scarred cheek. "I am asking you to help me fight back. You taught me not to be invisible anymore. Teach me how to be a monster."

Damian stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. The fierce, uncompromising resolve in my eyes finally broke his resistance. He let out a heavy sigh, pulling me into a crushing embrace.

"Gabriel," Damian ordered over my shoulder, the lethal tactician returning instantly. "Pull up the blueprints for Pier 44. We are going to build a trap that Tyler Bennett will never walk out of."

We spent the next six hours orchestrating a masterpiece of tactical deception.

Gabriel manufactured a flawless, encrypted digital clone of the micro-SD card. It contained enough legitimate banking data to verify its authenticity upon a quick scan, but the core files were embedded with a devastating, highly aggressive malware virus that would instantly brick any network it was plugged into.

"When Tyler plugs this into the Volkov mainframe to verify the ledger, it will permanently wipe their entire global banking network," Gabriel explained, handing me the fake drive.

"But that doesn't solve the problem of the hostage exchange," I noted, my hands shaking as I took the tiny piece of plastic.

"You aren't doing an exchange," Damian stated, strapping a heavy ballistic vest over his black tactical sweater. He handed me a sleek, compact 9mm pistol, checking the chamber with terrifying efficiency. "You are the bait. I am the executioner."
