Chapter 14 - The Abandoned Safehouse

|
The smoking SUV limped for exactly four miles before the engine finally seized with a violent, grinding screech. Gabriel wrestled the dead, heavy vehicle into an abandoned subterranean parking garage beneath a half-constructed high-rise in the financial district.
We sat in the dark, hissing vehicle for a long, agonizing minute. The absolute silence was more terrifying than the gunfire.
"We have to move on foot," Gabriel whispered, unbuckling his tactical harness. "The Volkovs have eyes in the sky. If they see the thermal signature of this wreck, they’ll swarm us in ten minutes."
Damian shoved the heavy, warped door open. He grabbed his rifle and reached his free hand back in for me.
"Can you run, Harper?" Damian asked, his dark eyes intense and focused.
"I can run," I promised, pushing the lingering terror down into a tight box in my chest. I grabbed his hand, letting him pull me out into the freezing, damp air of the garage.
We moved rapidly, ascending three flights of concrete stairs in total darkness, relying solely on Gabriel’s night-vision goggles to guide us through the labyrinth of the unfinished construction site. My lungs burned, and my boots slipped on construction debris, but Damian’s grip on my hand never faltered, practically pulling me upward when my legs threatened to give out.
We finally reached a heavy steel utility door on the fourth floor. Gabriel punched a code into a hidden keypad. The door hissed open, revealing a completely furnished, heavily fortified safehouse apartment that overlooked the city through narrow, tinted sniper slots instead of windows.
Gabriel locked the heavy deadbolts behind us, engaging a massive steel crossbar.
"We’re secure," Gabriel breathed heavily, collapsing onto a nearby chair, checking his ammunition. "The perimeter is rigged with motion sensors and localized EMP jammers. We are completely off the grid."
I collapsed onto a plush leather sofa, my entire body shaking violently as the adrenaline finally crashed. I buried my face in my hands, a jagged, exhausted sob tearing from my throat.
Damian dropped his rifle onto a table. He didn't check the perimeter. He didn't speak to Gabriel. He walked straight to the sofa, pulling me up into his arms and sitting down, settling me firmly into his lap.
He wrapped his massive arms around me, burying his face in my neck, inhaling deeply.
"I've got you," Damian murmured fiercely, his heart hammering against my chest. "You are safe. I swear to God, you are safe."

The facade of the ruthless mafia boss completely shattered in the quiet sanctuary of the safehouse. He was just a man, desperately clinging to the woman he had almost watched die in a burning street.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding him just as tightly, finally allowing myself to believe that the nightmare of the night was truly over.
